Jacob Agar ( talk) 21:33, 21 January 2023 (UTC) Reply I actually came here to say the same thing the new UI isn't just ugly, but it's genuinely painful to use on desktop, to the point of being borderline-unusable. Why is there so much white space on the left side? Is wikipedia for Zoomers on iPhones now, like TikTok or some other garbage? This is the worst website redesign I've ever seen, including that one that Digg did like 12 years ago that made literally everyone leave the site for Reddit. It's looks like garbage on a widescreen laptop monitor. I have no idea how someone may break so much the user experience as they did. Get education experts when designing the UI next time. It isn't just that there aren't any visible borders anymore, there also is no contrast whatsoever and the text flickers while scrolling! It horrid and counterintuitive as fuck, because it makes your eye get lost and is utterly immemorable and thus fails to fulfill the basic criteria of visual educational material. There no longer seems to be any visual (like actually visuable) organization of a page beyond the paragraphs. What used to look like an encyclopaedia now looks like a white wall of simply nothing. Why the fuck do UI designers think removing borders and cramping everything into togglers actually makes things better? Like who the fuck sparked that trend? Apple? I study education and am in deep shock about the new wikipedia layout. ![]() ![]() ![]() And for example the concept of “temperature” is there because exponential distributions familiar from statistical physics happen to be being used, but there’s no “physical” connection-at least so far as we know.)īefore we go on I should explain that for purposes of exposition I’m mostly not going to use the full system that’s in ChatGPT instead I’ll usually work with a simpler GPT-2 system, which has the nice feature that it’s small enough to be able to run on a standard desktop computer. (It’s worth emphasizing that there’s no “theory” being used here it’s just a matter of what’s been found to work in practice. And, in keeping with the idea of voodoo, there’s a particular so-called “temperature” parameter that determines how often lower-ranked words will be used, and for essay generation, it turns out that a “temperature” of 0.8 seems best. The fact that there’s randomness here means that if we use the same prompt multiple times, we’re likely to get different essays each time. But if sometimes (at random) we pick lower-ranked words, we get a “more interesting” essay. Because for some reason-that maybe one day we’ll have a scientific-style understanding of-if we always pick the highest-ranked word, we’ll typically get a very “flat” essay, that never seems to “show any creativity” (and even sometimes repeats word for word). But this is where a bit of voodoo begins to creep in. the one to which the highest “probability” was assigned). ![]() But which one should it actually pick to add to the essay (or whatever) that it’s writing? One might think it should be the “highest-ranked” word (i.e. (More precisely, as I’ll explain, it’s adding a “token”, which could be just a part of a word, which is why it can sometimes “make up new words”.)īut, OK, at each step it gets a list of words with probabilities. ![]() But the end result is that it produces a ranked list of words that might follow, together with “probabilities”:Īnd the remarkable thing is that when ChatGPT does something like write an essay what it’s essentially doing is just asking over and over again “given the text so far, what should the next word be?”-and each time adding a word. ChatGPT effectively does something like this, except that (as I’ll explain) it doesn’t look at literal text it looks for things that in a certain sense “match in meaning”. Imagine scanning billions of pages of human-written text (say on the web and in digitized books) and finding all instances of this text-then seeing what word comes next what fraction of the time. So let’s say we’ve got the text “ The best thing about AI is its ability to”. The first thing to explain is that what ChatGPT is always fundamentally trying to do is to produce a “reasonable continuation” of whatever text it’s got so far, where by “reasonable” we mean “what one might expect someone to write after seeing what people have written on billions of webpages, etc.” (And the essence of what I’ll say applies just as well to other current “large language models” as to ChatGPT.) I should say at the outset that I’m going to focus on the big picture of what’s going on-and while I’ll mention some engineering details, I won’t get deeply into them. ![]() But how does it do it? And why does it work? My purpose here is to give a rough outline of what’s going on inside ChatGPT-and then to explore why it is that it can do so well in producing what we might consider to be meaningful text. That ChatGPT can automatically generate something that reads even superficially like human-written text is remarkable, and unexpected. “Wolfram|Alpha as the Way to Bring Computational Knowledge Superpowers to ChatGPT” » A discussion about the history of neural nets » ![]() ![]() ![]() That’s because writing new content from scratch is quite challenging, as the main job of a content writer or a copywriter is to introduce new ideas through the right selection of words.įor this reason, the writers must understand the importance of paraphrasing and paragraph rewriter, which brings us to the importance of a free paraphrase tool. A new well-designed logo brands these POPOS to help the public understand the individual spaces as part of a larger network. In 2012 the City approved legislation that upgraded the signage controls, requiring additional information be provided about the POPOS and regulating the size, design, and content of the plaques. This value is lost if the spaces are not readily identifiable and accessible. ![]() POPOS provide a great value to workers, residents and visitors of the Downtown. Specific programs were created to satisfy needs for additional housing, transit, childcare, open space, and art. New commercial development would provide new revenue sources to cover a portion of the costs of necessary urban service improvements. The groundbreaking " Downtown Plan," adopted in 1985, was developed under the fundamental assumption that significant employment and office development growth would occur. To help catalog the Downtown public art gallery and to increase public access to this art, the Planning Department has created a map displaying the locations and images of public art in the downtown district (see Map tab), and a printable guide available for download: Today's Downtown Gallery. The spirit of the 1% for Art requirement is to ensure that the public has access to high-quality and variety in art. More than 25 years since the adoption of the Downtown Plan, downtown has seen the growth of an extensive outdoor gallery that enriches the environment for workers and tourists alike. Since then, project sponsors for residential projects may provide POPOS instead of their required open spaces in the Downtown Residential (DTR) and Eastern Neighborhoods (Section 135 of the Planning Code). The goal was to "provide in the downtown quality open space in sufficient quantity and variety to meet the needs of downtown workers, residents and visitors." (See Planning Code Section 138 for regulations). The 1985 Downtown Plan created the first systemic requirements for developers to provide publicly accessible open space as a part of projects in C-3 Districts. Prior to 1985, developers provided POPOS under three general circumstances: voluntarily, in exchange for a density bonus, or as a condition of approval. In San Francisco, POPOS mostly appear in the Downtown office district area. Read a summary of the current requirements for Public Art. In 2013, Section 429 of the Planning Code was amended to expand the public art requirement to all non-residential projects that involve a new building or addition in excess of 25,000 square feet in 15 zoning districts, concentrated in sections north of downtown along the waterfront, most of the South of Market, Dogpatch, and parts of the Mission District. To read more about the requirements, and the Public Art Trust, please read the Public Art Requirement Fact Sheet. ![]() Since May 2012, some projects may choose to dedicate a portion of their 1% Art requirement to the City's Public Art Trust. This program was established by the 1985 Downtown Plan and is governed by Section 429 of the Planning Code. San Francisco has a 1% Art Program that requires all projects involving new building, or the addition of 25,000 square feet or more in the Downtown and nearby neighborhoods, provide public art equal to at least 1% of the total construction cost. ![]() |
